March Favorites!

Today is the last day of March (I can't believe it), which means it's time for my monthly favorites list!  This month, I've starting to get back into the swing of spring with some fun colors and patterns.  I have also included some of my favorite beauty products!

To start, I'm loving these brand new "Lana" pumps from BCBGeneration ($79)!  They are made of pony hair (which is actually just normal calf leather with the hair left on), and are dyed to look like zebra skin!  I love the fun, original pattern, and I also love that they have a slight sheen to them that really makes them pop!  I haven't even worn these out yet, but I just love looking at them!  If zebra isn't your thing, they also come in black, blue, purple, and snake skin (which i also love)!

I also love my Marc Jacobs wallet that I snagged from Loehmann's a while back for about $100! This wallet is great for spring because of the pop of neon green, and it's fun and original!  Marc Jacobs always finds a way to win me over, and this is one accessory that I just couldn't go without!

Next up is my "Spring Greening" palette from Tarte Cosmetics!  This palette was available last year, but now it looks like your best bet to snag this baby is on ebay. I was excited to break this out, as I love the gorgeous spring shadows and the cute coral, pink, and sheer lip glosses!  The bamboo eyeshadow brush is also super cute and very soft!  This is one of the first items that really made me fall in love with Tarte Cosmetics!

Now that it's one again acceptable for me to start sporting a tan in Chicago, I'm excited to break out my signature spring and summer color from OPI!  This color looks great against tan skin, and OPI polishes go on nicely and remain chip-free for several days!  This color is from OPI's India Collection and is called "Elephantastic Pink" ($8)!

Spring also means it's time to show some leg!  Now that it's even more important to keep my legs silky smooth, I've been looking for a shaving cream that help prevent irritation and razor burn.  Recently, I purchased Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel ($4.29), which contains natural colloidal oatmeal, and I have been really happy with the results.  I have very sensitive skin, but this shave gel has definitely helped calm my skin and keep those irritating bumps at bay!

For haircare, I'm loving Living Proof's Full Thickening Mousse ($26).  I reviewed this product in a previous post, but I noticed the price went up a couple dollars since I purchased this mousse.  Although it is definitely expensive, it really helps create volume and holds my style all day!  If you have really fine hair, you might want to consider giving this a shot!

This next fave is not for us ladies, but rather for our men!  Acca Kappa 1869 ($72) is an Eau de Cologne that is unique and sexy!  This cologne has notes of cardamom, geranium, iris, violet, amber, vanilla, and leather.  When my boyfriend wears this I can't stop smelling him!  It's very subtle (which I like- hate it when I can smell people from 10 feet away), and it lasts all day!

My final favorite for March is this super cute soy candle I just got from T-aromas on Etsy!  I actually got this candle for free as a little thank you gift for my order, but I love the scent and how long this candle lasts!  I've probably burned it for 5 hours now, and it's still not even halfway gone.  At $4, this candle is a steal, and I love that it's handmade!

So that wraps up another month of faves!  What are you fabulous ladies loving right now?  Have you picked up any fun new spring items lately?  I'd love to hear all about it!  :)  Have a lovely day- and don't forget to enter my Philosophy gift set giveaway which ends Saturday!

Hair Trend: Feather Extensions

Last Thursday I briefly mentioned that I was contemplating getting a feather extension in my hair.  I know some of you haven’t heard about these yet, so I wanted to fill you in on this hair trend!  Feather extensions first started making news this past winter, mostly on the west coast, but now the feather fad is starting to travel east.
Here is a photo of Ke$ha with feather hair extensions.

Normally, I wouldn't want to follow in KeSha's hair footsteps, mainly because of this...

And this...

But, I do think feather extensions can be pretty cute, and a fun way to temporarily change your hairstyle.
The extension process is relatively quick and simple.  Basically, the stylist (or person applying the extension) takes a small strand of hair, slides a tiny bead up the strand near the root, and inserts a feather into the bead.  Then a small tool similar to pliers is used to clamp down the bead and secure the feather to your hair.  In fact, this process is so simple that kits are available for home use.  However, I think it would be difficult to apply to my own hair, so having a friend to help would probably be a good idea.

People have been seen wearing feathers of all sizes and colors.  Personally, I like the more natural colors such as brown, white, and black, but I think the bright colors look good with some girls style.  Men have also been getting in on this trend, but I don’t know too many fellows who would be daring enough to give this a shot!  Since the feathers can be applied fairly easily and also removed easily, you can add , remove, or change the feathers as often as you like.  However, if you want to keep the same look for a while, the feathers can last up to 6-8 weeks, and can be washed and styled just like the rest of your hair.  Salon services cost around $10-$12 per feather, while kits cost between $30-$50.  Kits are also available online.

While the more refined, professional side of me is wary of trying out this look, the hippy/bohemian side of me really wants to give it a shot!  Since I’m not ready to commit to the look, I think I’m going to swing by a local salon (there are currently only a handful of Chicago salons offering this service) to have a single feather added to my hair.  I have a feeling this won’t be a long lasting trend, but I think it would be a lot of fun to give it a shot while the look is still going strong!

So what do you ladies think about this look?  Is this a trend you think will stay around for a while, or will it come and go as fast as slap bracelets and Von Dutch?

Mix & Mingle Monday

Although you found out several fun facts about me in my two award posts on Thursday, I definitely want to learn more about you all, so I didn’t want to skip this week’s Mix and Mingle Monday!  This past week I spent some time with my family and went shopping with my mom, which got me even more excited about spring and all the fabulous trends emerging for the season!  Thus, the topic for today will be Spring!  Below are some fun, spring related questions with my answers.
Wide Legs by Derek Lam
1. What current trend are you most excited about?
As a girl with fairly muscular legs (from volleyball), I’m definitely excited about the return of 70’s and the wide leg and flare jeans that go along with it!  While skinny jeans are still going strong, wide legs are definitely more flattering for my calves!

2. What’s your favorite thing to do outside during the spring?
I love putting up my patio lights and planting flowers in the spring.  Sitting on the balcony sipping on cocktails is one of my favorite things to do on a warm night, so getting my space ready is always exciting!

Our Balcony in the Spring
      3. What’s your least favorite thing to do outside during the spring?
Spring cleaning!  As much as I love planting flowers and hanging lights, I hate cleaning all the grime left from winter off my big balcony windows, floor, and railings!  Ugh!

Friends from South Dakota
(I'm in black)

4. What spring event or Holiday are you most looking forward to?
Although I’m not a baseball fanatic, it’s hard to live in Chicago and not look forward to opening day at Wrigley field!  Everyone is so excited for the season to start, and the games are so much fun to attend (even though I’m a Cincinnati Reds fan)!

Cole Haan Crossbody
      5. What do you deem a wardrobe necessity for spring?
This spring, I think a bright colored handbag is definitely a must!  Citrus and jewel tones seem especially hot right now, so I’m going to be looking for a gorgeous orange, turquoise, or emerald bag to tote along with me!

Now it’s your turn!  What are your answers to these fun spring questions?  I love learning more about all my fabulous online friends and am waiting to see what you have to say!

Review: Tarte EmphasEYES Brow High Definition Eyebrow Pencil

I just returned from my visit to my parent’s house, and I’m ready to get back into the swing of things!  For tonight’s post, I’d like to review a new eyebrow pencil I bought while I was away.  First, though, I need to say one thing- GO BULLDOGS!  As you probably know, I’m definitely a girly-girl, but I also love my sports, so I’m very excited that my favorite NCAA men’s basketball team is headed to the final four for the second year in a row!  Ok, enough of the jock talk.

While shopping with my mother earlier this week, I stopped by Sephora to look for a new eyebrow filler.  I’ve been using Benefit’s Brow Zing for a while, but haven’t been very satisfied with the results.  The wax was a bit difficult to apply, and the powder didn’t quite match my brows.  Since I was fed up with struggling to apply this wax/powder combo, I thought I’d try a pencil this time around.  After checking out my options and chatting with one of Sephora’s color specialists, I decided on Tarte’s EmphasEYES for Brows High Definition Eyebrow Pencil in Taupe.

EmphasEYES Brow in Taupe Swatch
This brow pencil is super fine and comes in a clickable dispenser, so you never have to sharpen it, just turn the end.  At the opposite end of the pencil is a small, sturdy brow brush that can be used for softening brows before applying the pencil, or after to perfectly style your brows.  The pencil itself glides on easily without pulling hairs, and the taupe is just the right color for my light brown eyebrows.  Unfortunately, the pencil only comes in two colors (taupe & medium brown), so you ladies with super light blonde brows might have to pass on this product.

I really like that this pencil allows you to fill in your brows without looking like you simply drew in some hairs.  It blends well with your actual hair, and stays on all day.  This pencil is waterproof, so it really does last (even on someone like me who has fairly oily skin)!  Overall, I think this is brow pencil is definitely superior to Benefit’s Brow Zing, and it’s not too terribly expensive ($19.50).  Hopefully this pencil lasts a while as well, but that is yet to be determined.

Haute Lunch Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Trays

I’m glad I found a new brow product to fill in my over plucked eyebrows now that fuller brows are back in fashion.  Hopefully my own eyebrows will grow back in some more, but Tarte’s EmphasEYES Brow Pencil is a great remedy in the meantime!  Are any of you ladies lucky enough to have full, manageable eyebrows, or are you like me and need a little extra help to fill in those babies?  I’ve always had a love-hate (or maybe more of a hate-hate) relationship with my eyebrows, so I’d love to hear about your situations and experiences!

Spring Break 2011!

Hey ladies!  It's Spring Break, 2011, and this time to party!?!  Well, no, if you're spring break (or "real job" equivalent of) is anything like mine, there probably won't be much partying involved.  However, I am excited for my mini-trip I'm taking today to see my family in southern Indiana.  Unfortunately, it's not much warmer there than it is here in Chicago, but I thought I'd show everyone what I'm taking along for the next few days anyway.  Hopefully I will have another trip in the near future that will require a bikini, but for now, I'm still stuck in sweaters and jeans.

Here are the tops I'm brining- from top to bottom: The Limited cardigan (X-mas gift from parents) over a black sequin tank from Tempted; Ann Taylor Loft Cardigan over a Threads sequin and beaded tank; INC International turtleneck with runched 3/4 length sleeves (also a gift from my fabulous parents); Banana Republic square neck sweater (cut-off).

I'm also brining a couple pairs of jeans in addition to the ones I'm wearing today. On the left is a pair of Mek Denim distressted flare blue jeans, and on the right is a pair of Citizens of Humanity wide leg jeans in slate grey. Above that is my workout gear, including my Nike LunarGlide 2 running shoes (birthday gift from parents), some t-shirts, shorts, etc.  Above the workout gear you can see some lingerie (the leopard print set is from Jezebel and was purchased with the BareNecessities gift card I won from Couture Carrie)!

For jewelry, I'm bringing (left to right) a silver fabric bangle (I can't remember where it's from), my gorgeous multi-strand Kenneth Cole necklace (yet another gift from the parents), a purple and green bangle from Macy's, Kenneth Cole jeweled three-tier earrings (from my awesome sister), pearl drop earrings, my gorgeous blue topaz ring and tanzanite ring (both from my wonderful boyfriend, Kellen), a multi-strand bracelet from The Limited (again, from parents), a lavender freshwater pearl and white gold necklace (from Kellen), my Le Chateau white ceramic and crystal watch, and my Michael Kors resin and rose gold tone watch with crystals from Kellen (which was featured in my February Faves post)!  Whew, that was a lot!  :)

Of course, a girl can't go anywhere without shoes, so I'm brining my BCBG black buckled flats, my brown suede Michael Kors zipper flats, and my brand new grey microsueade booties I got from Sole Society (see my review here)!  Under my booties are some cute PJs from Victoria's Secret my mom got me.  Also, to the left you can see my weekender bag from LeSportsac, as well as my travel makeup bag. What's in my makeup bag you ask?  Well...

In my travel makeup bag you will find a small collection of items, many of which were samples from Sephora, Ulta, etc.  At the top I have Benefit's Get Even face powder in medium, Benefit's Dallas Boxed Blush, Benefits Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in Stiletto, Benefit's lust duster, and Sephora's Colorful Mono Eyeshadow in Warm Sand.  The next row includes Smashbox Reflection High Shine lip gloss, Bare Escentuals Prime Time (which I reviewed here), Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss in Pearl Plum, Benefit's Miss Congeniality, two eyeliner pencils from Estee Lauder, Bliss Rollerball fragrance, and Estee Lauder Projectionist mascara.  Last but not least are my travel makeup brushes (I only bring the necessities), and an eyeshadow and lipgloss palette from Benefit which has been discontinued.

So that's everything I'm brining with me for my trip!  I will be updating Haute Lunch everyday from Indiana, so be sure to stop by!  I hope you lovely ladies enjoy the rest of your week!  Are any of you going on a fun trip soon?  I'd love to hear about it!

Get a Grip: Tweezers in Review

I was lucky enough to inherit my wonderful grandfathers unruly, bushy eyebrows (yay!).  Though they are much thinner now due to years of teenage plucking rampages, they still take some time to tame, which is why a good pair of tweezers is a must for my beauty collection.  I've tried several different brands over the years, but here are three of the tweezers I've tried recently, and my thoughts on each:

I'll start off by reviewing the cheapest pair of the bunch, Trim's Slant Tip Tweezer. It is definitely the worst pair of tweezers I've ever tried. While it's available for just $1.99 at most drugstores, it is extremely dull and thus doesn't grip hardly any hairs. I purchased this tweezer on vacation when I forgot mine at home, and it quickly found it's way into the nearest trashcan.

Haute Lunch Rating: 1 out of 5 trays

Revlon's Slant Tip Micro Fine Tweezer is also pretty inexpensive. This tweezer is precise and can grab both fine and coarse hair. I was really impressed with this tweezer when I first purchased it, especially because it retails for just $5.99! While I still think it's a great buy for the price, it did become dull and loose it's gripping ability after a few months, so I am no longer able to use it.

Haute Lunch Rating: 4 out of 5 Trays

The last pair is one I'm sure everyone has heard about, Tweezerman's Slant Tweezer. This tweezer is a best seller and has won numerous awards. For a long time I was hesitant to shell out $20 for a pair of tweezers, but I'm glad I did. The hand-filed slant tip has no trouble grabbing every hair and these babies are still sharp after nearly a year! It's no wonder that makeup artists always recommend Tweezerman. I should have listened to my boyfriend a long time ago- he's been using Tweezerman tweezers for several years and won't buy another brand! The only downside is the price, but since they've lasted a year now, it would be equivalent to buying four pairs of Revlon's slant tweezers (which I would have had to do if I stuck with those)!

Haute Lunch Rating: 5 out of 5 Trays

What tweezer do you ladies use?  I've always gone with a slant tip (as you can probably see), but has anyone had any luck with point tweezers?  I'd love to hear from you!

Baby's 1st Blogger Award

Although my mom probably won't add this achievement to my baby book, I am thrilled to announce that last night I received my very 1st mini blogger award! The fabulous Alyson of The Average Girl's Guide deemed me worthy of the Versatile Blogger Award! Check out her award post here.

As part of the award, I am to link back to the individual who bestowed it upon me, write seven facts about myself, and present it to seven other fabulous bloggers!

Here are my 7 fast facts:

  1. I have a wonderful boyfriend, Kellen, who gives fabulous foot massages and makes the best mocha latte I've ever had!
  2. I was a bartender at a blues club in Chicago for over 4 years, so I can make a mean martini!
  3. I'm currently working on my Master's in Psychology, but my previous degrees include a B.A. in Psychology, and more surprisingly, an A.S. in the Culinary Arts!
  4. The town I grew up in was so small that it didn't have a movie theatre, a mall, or even a chain restaurant other than fast food places!
  5. I love animals and currently have a cat named Noodle, but my previous pets have included Hammie the Hamster, Jamal the Beta Fish, Sneaker, Tiger, & Minor (all cats), Xavier, Jack, & Major (all dogs), and some other fish I can't remember the names of!
  6. I have played volleyball for 16 years now, and was fortunate enough to play in college and on a club team that placed in nationals!
  7. I love making lists- for everything! My boyfriend thought I it was odd that I enjoy list making so much, but then he met my mother, who has since made several lists in his presence! :)
And now for my 7 lovely, versatile awardees:

Congrats to these bloggers, and thanks again to Alyson of The Average Girl's Guide for giving me this fabulous award!

Also, my seven facts listed above will serve as my "Mix & Mingle Monday" for the week, so please feel free to comment about them and tell me some interesting facts about yourself! I love to hear from you all!
